Fashion Faves

2/24/2025

When I was a teenager in Richmond, Virginia, magazines were my window into other, more glamorous worlds. It was the time of the supermodels — Linda, Christy, Naomi — and I loved escaping into gorgeous images and imagining my fabulous future in New York. Ha! I ended up in California, and while I did become a magazine editor and then art director, my life is (happily) far from glamorous. However, I've recently found myself pulled toward fashion again and have discovered so many wonderful fashion-related things that are making my inner teenager very happy.

Supreme Models is a 6-part Netflix series (based on a book of the same name) about the history of black models in the fashion industry. It's gorgeous, sad, infuriating, and inspirational.

The podcast Blow-Up revisits bits of 90s fashion that I LOVED — the revitalization of Harper's Bazaar by Liz Tilberis. Magazine talk AND fashion — swoon.

Advanced Style by Ari Seth Cohen is both a book and a documentary. I am so inspired by the creativity, vitality, and  general zest of these older women!

I'm not sure how I discovered the Fashion People podcast, but I'm so glad I did! It's about the fashion business, and listening to it feels like reading fashion magazines used to when I was a teen — scouring mastheads, reading captions, etc — taking it every little detail of this industry that fascinated me.

One night when I couldn't sleep, I came across Celeste Barber series The Way We Wore on Netflix. I am aware of Celeste from her social media accounts, where she hilariously skewers the ridiculous beauty standards placed on women. This series travels through fashion's history in Australia, Celeste's home country.

Sacai is a Japanese fashion label designed by Chitose Abe. She started the label in 1999, but I only discovered it recently. It was the first time I saw a full line and thought "that all looks like me!" I love Sacai's artsy, architectural style and the overall vibe of basics with a twist. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a few pieces!
